The WCB provides financial protection, medical treatment and rehabilitation services
to workers and their dependents in cases of injury or death arising out of, and in the
course of, employment. These services are funded by premiums collected from employers
by the WCB. The premiums are placed in an
Injury Fund, which is used to provide
compensation benefits to injured workers. The WCB also provides a variety of other services
to help injured workers return to work. View

Automatic Coverage
Most workers in Saskatchewan are automatically covered by the province's workers'
compensation legislation. All full-time, part-time and seasonal workers working in
industries covered under the law are covered as soon as they begin employment. If you are
unsure of your status, check with your employer or the WCB. For a list of exempted
industries and occupations, view the Workers' Compensation Act's
Exclusion Regulations.
Currently, the maximum coverage is $55,000.
Optional Coverage
Farm workers, farmers and the self-employed are not automatically covered by the WCB.
However, people in these groups can apply for coverage if they meet the definition of a
"worker" set out in legislation.
For example, farm workers and any paid farm family members are eligible for coverage. A
person operating a business as a proprietorship or partnership, who is not receiving a
regular paycheque is also eligible, as long as the person is doing work for more than one
customer. Currently, the maximum annual income coverage amount is $55,000. The coverage
chosen should reflect the person's actual income.
Out-of-Province Coverage
In this era of joint ventures and globalization, it is becoming more common for
Saskatchewan workers to take on assignments or projects outside the province. To protect
workers and employers in these situations, the WCB provides limited out-of-province/country
coverage for Saskatchewan workers.
Because WCB legislation applies only in the province, this extended coverage is on an
"insurance-only" basis. That means workers and employers do not have the usual protection
from expensive and time consuming litigation provided by workers' compensation. View
