What is a work injury?
A work injury is the result of any work-related event that causes a need for medical treatment and/or time away from work. The WCB considers each work injury on an individual basis, but in most cases compensation would apply to injuries that occur while a worker is at work, on company premises or on company business. This includes an occupational disease caused by work.

What To Do
If you are injured at work, take the following steps:

  • Get medical attention if you need it. Your employer should provide appropriate first aid and arrange immediate transportation so you can receive appropriate treatment from a qualified health care professional.
  • Have your caregiver report to the WCB.
  • Report the incident to your employer immediately.
  • Complete and submit the Worker's Initial Report of Injury (W1) as soon as possible (by WCBTelefile, mail, fax or on-line).
  • Participate with your employer, caregiver and the WCB in setting up a personalized return-to-work plan. The plan usually includes treatment, employment services and suitable work duties.
For more information, see our Recovery and Return to Work brochure.

What Happens Next
Effective claims management must involve not only the WCB, but also employers, workers and caregivers, in a cooperative relationship. The WCB uses a pro-active case management system to maximize early treatment and provide superior client service.

  • Claims are immediately sorted to focus attention on injuries with complications or those of a more serious, longer-term nature.
  • Computer-generated schedules, time lines and standards result in prompt treatment and return-to-work.
  • Multiple rehabilitation and return-to-work activities run at the same time.
  • Treatment, physical rehabilitation and return-to-work plans are continuously monitored to ensure the worker's progress to recovery and return to the workplace.
If You Disagree with a Decision
If you or your dependants disagree with a decision the WCB makes on your injury claim, you have several review and appeal options available.
