Description

Operational Details
The manufacturing of agricultural machinery and implements covers a wide array of equipment self propelled, or towed. Welding angle iron, assembling parts and components, bolting and riveting metal are some of the common activities undertaken. Machining is a supportive activity to the welding process, and may include sizing and turning shafts. Some of the steel used may also be stainless steel or galvanized steel. Drill presses, cultivators, discs, harrows, plows, mowers, are some of the farm implements manufactured. Some wood may be used in wagon assembly, but for the most part, steel is the primary material used.

Customers may want customized equipment for specific jobs. It could include fork extensions on a forklift, an oversized bucket on a loader, or under carriage work may be done to reinforce the framework or to extend the frame of a piece of equipment. Horse trailers and farm wagons are some of the other products manufactured, which are of lighter weight steel or sheet metal.

The Prairie Implement Manufacturers Association (P.I.M.A.) represent a number of welding and machine shops that specialize in farm equipment manufacturing. There are several other associated members who, to some degree, manufacture farm implements, however, it is not the major focus of their industry, but only one of many product lines produced. In this case, if the business can be identified as belonging elsewhere. It should not be classified in this subcode. (An example is a welding shop that manufactures manure spreaders, but its main source of income is from farm machinery repair. This would qualify for the welding classification.)

Equipment used includes: welders, lathes, drill presses, brakes, shearers, slitters, iron workers, sheet metal cutters, work bench vises, overhead cranes and floor lifts, hydraulic jacks, hand and power tools, etc. Most often, semi-skilled workers are used and may or may not be certified welders, machinists, mechanics, etc.
