Description

Operational Details
Marble and stone work basically involves taking raw products and sizing or cutting them to the desired size. This is accomplished by operating wire or blade saws, usually made out of tungsten carbide, and cutting the stone into blocks or cubes. The stone is then ground and polished using grinders and buffer wheels. Portable hand blasting equipment may be used to cut inscriptions into the stone (i.e. monuments and tombstones), to produce a specific design or shape. Workers also drill holes, using a drill press, in the blocks or slabs of stone according to specifications.

Maintenance of equipment includes using a stone-dressing lathe to sharpen and dress grindstones. These dull fairly quickly because of the abrasive nature of marble and granite-like materials.

The manufacturing of sand screens, while a dissimilar activity in this rate unit, has similar loss expectations. This is a piece of equipment that has application in the cement, clay products and stone industry. Basically the employer builds a framework, using angle iron or wood. The frame is spot welded and a heavy gauge metal screen is attached. Otherwise, screws, nails or bolts may be used. Commercial sand screens see much heavier usage, and for this reason they must be constructed out of heavier and more durable materials. The screens would be marketed to those in construction, road building, clay production, and the gravel and stone manufacturing industry.
