Description

Operational Details
Integral to this operation is the ability of the employer to work safely with hydrogen sulphide, a poisonous gas that accumulates in tank cars and must be removed before they can be repaired. This repair work requires the use of a Scot Pak, or oxygen mask that allows the worker to breath in oxygen, without exposure to the poisonous gas. The gas is pumped out of the tank and disposed of in a safe manner.

The repair and maintenance of the tanks, which are most often truck mounted, but can include rail tank cars, involves welding and re-seaming the tanks. Some painting and/or sand blasting may also be included, which are supportive to the overall industry being conducted.

What sets this activity apart from a welding shop is the need to work with H2S gas. Most welding shops would never consider repairing this type of tank, due to the danger of exposing their workers to toxic chemicals and poisonous gases. Another important consideration is the need for the welder to be a fully qualified “b” pressure welder, certified to work on pressure vessels.
