Description

Operational Details
Architects conceptualize, design, plan and develop plans for the construction of a building or a structure such as a house, apartment, commercial building, or a bridge. The architect often has a draftsman on staff who can take the drawings and project them into 3 dimensional pictures of the completed design.

An architect specializes in designing residences, museums, schools or public buildings that may be one of a kind and there are no standard plans available. The client or customer outlines their desire, or the architect proposes a design. Once agreement has been reached a design is prepared. During the process an engineering firm may consult with the architect to ensure the framework or shell will carry the load of the sheathing or skin that is placed over the frame. The engineer is often hired directly by the owner or client, or may be subcontracted by the architectural firm. The architect also provides cost estimates of the construction and advises on the types of materials that should be used that conforms to design and building standards.

During the construction phase, an architect may be commissioned by the owner to ensure design integrity is maintained. In some cases, changes must be made because of material availability, soil conditions, etc. In this case, the architect is consulted with to develop alternative plans or to give consent to the substituting of materials, or making changes that may alter the appearance of the structure.
