Description

Operational Details
Surveyors in general conduct field surveys, using surveying instruments to measure distance, angles, elevations and contours. They analyze latitude, longitude, and angles and compute trigonometrical and other calculations to plot features, contours and areas to specific scale. They also prepare detailed drawings, charts and survey notes.

Some surveyors are specialized in the resource industry and include mining surveyors and petroleum surveyors. Mining companies, oil and gas companies all require the accurate measurements be taken of leases and property they are operating on, and where it might infringe on other land users rights, etc.

Land surveyors develop plans, methods and procedures for conducting legal surveys. They establish legal boundaries of properties, parcels of land, subdivision of land for rural and urban development, utility right-of-ways, roadways and highways.

Surveyors record all measurements and other information obtained during survey activities. They prepare and compile data, charts, plans, records and documents related to surveys of real estate property. They also certify and accept liability for surveys made to establish legal boundaries and provide consultation on matters related to the survey.

A business who operates a drone to gather data and take imagery in order to analyse and produce survey results, must be regulated by Transport Canada. In most cases, the operator of a drone must have a Special Flight Operations Certificate and must follow the Canadian Aviation Regulations. A drone is also known as an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) or a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS).
