Description

Operational Details
Paper referred to here is not the initial processing of the pulp into paper as found in M33-02, Manufacture of chemicals, corrosive acids, fertilizers, pulp & paper. It is instead an added value operation that takes rolls of paper and cuts, folds and shapes it to the desired products such as legal size, letter size, poster paper etc.

Cardboard box manufacturing uses large rolls of heavy paper, which is fed into a corrugator, carried by conveyors. Then fronts and backs are glued onto the ends automatically, and cut to the desired length and width.

Printing is then added to the boxes by use of a special lettering machine that stencils and photographs the image onto the cardboard material. The boxes are sent to the finishing area where they are folded, stapled, or heat seamed, and scored to box sizes on die presses. The boxes are stacked and palletized for market.

This industry also includes the manufacturing of cardboard tubing, which is a similar process to the manufacturing of cardboard boxes. Winding, slitting and waxing machines are used in the tube process.
