With environmental protection becoming more of an issue, recycling has become a necessary way of reducing landfills and garbage dump volumes. The idea is to recycle much of the material that cannot be broken down through decay into useable products.

Waste management today is well planned and involves salvaging and recycling almost everything from plastic, glass, bottles, cans, cardboard, paper, chemicals to other hazardous wastes. Those involved in this industry operate out of a warehouse type of facility and involves the receiving of salvageable or recyclable materials from customers, baling the material, boxing, shredding, crushing, pulverizing, and disposing of unusable materials.

Equipment used in this business include: bins, tubs, boxes, conveyor systems, hoppers, balers, shredders, baggers, forklifts and trucks.

Bottles are crushed and the broken glass is sold commercially. Cans are also crushed and separated into metal types and sold to foundries or scrap metal dealers. Paper is sold to roofing manufacturers to be processed into roofing felts, etc.
