Description

Operational Details
Logging Operations
Conventional logging is the process of harvesting timber manually with tools such as a chain saw. Once the trees are cut down, they are delimbed and usually cut on site to produce posts, railway ties, firewood, etc.

Mechanical logging is the process of harvesting timber using equipment such as a feller buncher, grapple skidder, harvester, delimber, forwarder and loader.

A feller buncher is a machine used to fell trees and place them into stacks (bunches) for removal to the log landing for further processing.

A grapple skidder is a heavy vehicle that picks up piles of fallen trees and carries them from the cutting site to a landing. The grapple skidder has a hydraulic grapple bucket attached to the skidder by a boom, that grabs and lifts the timber.

A harvester is a machine used to fell trees, delimb them, cut them to the desired log length and stack for removal to the log landing.

A delimber strips limbs from fallen trees.

A forwarder is a vehicle that carries logs from the stump to a roadside landing. Unlike a skidder, a forwarder carries logs clear of the ground, which can reduce soil impacts but tends to limit the size of the logs it can move. Forwarders are typically employed together with harvesters in cut-to-length logging operations.

A loader is a vehicle that is used to load logs into or onto log haulers.

Silviculture
Forest regeneration is the process of renewing tree cover by establishing young trees naturally or artificially after the previous stand or forest has been removed.

Forest regeneration surveys involves the inspection of logged areas to determine natural stocking levels. Each area is inspected to locate natural regeneration (seedlings) and unstocked areas that will require planting or seeding.

Employers involved in stand tending or scarification are also included in this classification. Stand tending is the removal of competing vegetation from immature stands to ensure optimum growing conditions. Scarification involves the clearing or cleaning of land already logged by using heavy drag equipment.
