Regina, Sask., May 12, 2026 – The WCB is hosting its 28th annual Compensation Institute event today at the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina. This free event offers attendees a front-row seat to learn about the province’s compensation system, its policies and procedures, as well as workplace safety and injury prevention efforts. Those in attendance will hear from keynote presenters on a range of topics, experiences and perspectives regarding workplace safety and safety leadership and practices.

“Each year, the Compensation Institute event provides a valuable forum to connect with our customers and partners and explore the workplace issues that matter most to them,” said the WCB’s CEO Phillip Germain. “This year’s event will feature WCB, safety and return-to-work experts sharing practical insights and information to support workers and employers in navigating the compensation system while continuing important conversations around return to work, appeals and injury prevention. It’s an opportunity to learn, collaborate and strengthen our shared commitment to healthier, safer workplaces.”

The conference theme, customer insights and shared solutions, supports the featured topics, which include:

  • Overcoming return-to-work challenges and barriers.
  • Understanding WCB processes, procedures and resources for workers and employers in the areas of operations, employer services and prevention.
  • Providing an overview of Injured Worker Appeal Services, the Fair Practices Office and the appeals process.
  • Two employer panels which will examine processes for preventing workplace injuries and collaboration on return to work.

Keynote presenters during Compensation Institute include:

  • Garrison Wynn — With talents that established him as a Fortune 500 leader and professional stand-up comedian, Garrison Wynn, CSP, fuses comic timing and research to show how anyone can help create a culture of safety. He is authentic – a guy who's been there. Wynn is a chemical plant explosion survivor and bestselling author who has been featured in Forbes and Inc. magazines. For 26 years, he has given keynote presentations to clients such as Amazon, Caterpillar, The National Safety Council, National Mining Association, Governor's Occupational Safety & Health Conference (GOSH), Chevron, the NFL and NASA. In his teens, he helped debut the world’s first video console gaming system (Odyssey) and as a young man, Wynn spent six years touring comedy clubs with the top names in the business before going on to create industrial safety products still being sold in 30 countries.
  • Kevin Rempel — A 2014 Paralympic bronze medalist in sledge hockey, Kevin Rempel has lived through a life-changing moment. After being paralyzed in a motocross accident in 2006, he spent four years rebuilding his life and body, realizing how quickly one bad decision can affect an entire life. Additionally, his father, Gerry, experienced a life-altering accident after falling from a tree stand while deer hunting. Both Kevin’s accident and his fathers were preventable, and in both cases their ego played a role. Kevin’s story reminds us that safety is not just about rules or procedures. It is about the choices made every day. However, to make the right choices, individuals must not only learn how and when to listen to their inner voice, but learn to listen to the inner voice that is telling the truth. He will share his “Check Your E.G.O.” framework and how it can help individuals make better decisions, support others and prevent anyone’s own ego from leading them down the wrong path.

“Building on the powerful themes of resilience, learning and better decision-making, we are reminded that safer workplaces are created through shared experience and continuous growth,” said Kevin Mooney, the WCB’s vice-president of prevention and employer services. “Our commitment is to help build safer workplaces across the province. That work is only possible through strong partnerships, ongoing collaboration and a shared commitment to learning. Through Compensation Institute, we aim to equip workers and employers with the knowledge, tools and strategies they need to address workplace safety challenges while also creating meaningful opportunities for dialogue, shared understanding and continuous improvement.”
