Description

Operational Details
Electrical contractors may operate out of their home, a warehouse or supply store. Installing, repairing and running electrical wire at construction sites of all types is an integral activity. Additional work may include the installation and repair of transformers and high voltage equipment such as transformers, electrical starters, generators and breakers, etc.

Repair and maintenance are ongoing in this industry and service contracts are regularly entered into with building and industrial plant owners and operators. Work may also involve installing, repairing and maintaining equipment in the oilpatch. Anywhere there are electrical appliances, equipment, machines, electrical fixtures or wiring problems, an electrician will usually be required to fix it.

Electrical contractors often bid for the same service contracts as a mechanical contractor (plumbing firm), and because each have access to the other’s trade, there are cross overs. An electrical contractor may also have an electrical engineer on staff who helps design systems for the customers. Engineering is an integral part of this industry when done in conjunction with the ongoing business of electrical contracting.

Employers who supply and install Solar panels normally measure, cut, assemble, install and connect the panels to the electricity system on behalf of the customer. Workers employed typically have construction experience, but must be able to activate and test the solar panels i.e. link the panels to the electricity and perform routine maintenance. Solar Panels may either be fitted to the ground or on a roof. Engineers may be employed to ensure that the roof can support the panels. Solar Panels convert light energy from the sun into electric power. The Direct Current (DC) voltage is converted to an AC voltage using an inverter, this is tied to the electricity system and utility grid. Solar panels may also be referred to as photovoltaic panels (PV)
