Description

Operational Details
Chain stores include a number of stores operated and directed by a single owner or entity.
The advantage of operating a chain store is that large volume buying allows products to be purchased at a lower cost. This in turn makes it more cost effective for the store owner and customer to purchase these goods.

Chain stores, also because of their size, stock a large variety of food and non-food products. The operations can also include in-house servicing such as repairing appliances, and transporting their own products from store to store.

Products are ordered from food wholesalers, dairies, poultry producers, meat packing plants, vegetable growers and fruit growers. Non-food products are often directly ordered from the manufacturer or provincial distributor of the product. A chain store also has larger stocks on hand, due to public demand.

A feature of a chain store is that there are very few employees on the floor. Most of them stock shelves or move goods. Cashiers often operate in tandem, or 5-6 tills may be in use at one time. While baggers may assist someone to their vehicle, delivery of groceries to a customer’s residence is not part of the service provided.
