Description

Operational Details
Employers in this industry make rewind repairs to all makes, including: A.C. - D.C. motors, generators, transformers, armatures, controls and gear reduction units. Surge testing, vibration analysis, dynamic balancing, magnetic repair and servicing may be done as an authorized repair shop for manufacturers including: General Electric, Westinghouse, Seimens, Toshiba, Emerson, Reliance, etc.

Generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy through the use of magnets. A spinning wire coil is introduced between the north and south poles of the magnet and electrons within the wire are effected so that they flow along the wire first one way, then the other. Thus, an alternating electrical current is created.

An electrical motor is the reverse of a generator. It converts electrical energy into mechanical energy by exploiting the force that a magnetic field exerts on a current. Instead of feeding electricity away from a wire loop (as with a generator), electricity is passed through the loop. When the loop is introduced between the magnetic heads it starts to spin. The spinning movement can be enhanced through a variety of devices.

Technicians repair generators and electrical motors by refurbishing them with replacement parts and in particular, install various gauges of copper wire and magnets that result in restoring their serviceability. Equipment used includes: coil winding machines, blowtorches, soldering irons, electrical testing equipment, power and hand tools. Armature rewinding involves removing the old copper wire from the armature and rewinding replacement copper in its place.

The generators and electrical engines are of various sizes and are used in residential, commercial and industrial applications.
