Employers offer a wide selection of generalized mechanical services including the installation, repair or replacement of motors (diesel and gas powered), transmissions, transfer cases, brakes, mufflers, heaters, alternators, batteries, water and fuel pumps, air conditioners, lights, tires etc. Repairs often include replacement parts which may be inventoried on site or ordered as needed. Much of the repairs includes replacement of parts. Generally, large inventories of generic parts are stocked, which are used in the repair. Tires, lubricants, mud flaps and other auto parts are also stocked. Automotive machining may be done on an incidental basis.
Mobile automotive mechanical repair involves a mechanic being sent out on location to repair a vehicle however if the customer’s vehicle is towed back to the garage for repairs, the towing is considered part of these overall operations. Some mobile mechanics use service trucks that allow them to do field repairs, this service is common in isolated areas. An employer may also obtain a maintenance contract in which they may use a service truck and the customer’s facilities to make the required repairs.
Equipment used in repairing automobiles may include; a service truck, tow truck, hand and power tools, grinders, welding, electrical tools and floor cranes and jacks for positioning the vehicle. Oil changes and grease jobs may be done as a customer service. The automotive repair shops are generalists, if a diagnosis is made and the repair is beyond their ability, the vehicle (or part) is sent to an automotive repair specialist such as a muffler, transmission, or auto electric shop.
