Muffler repair shops sell and install mufflers, tailpipes, clamps and associated parts.

Generally, the business is usually a franchise store for companies such as Midas or Speedy Muffler. Licensed mechanics are not required in this business, and most often an employee with some welding expertise is hired to weld sections of the pipe together. Bolting and clamping completes the process. Catalytic converters may be removed and new ones installed, and some custom pipe bending may be done for a custom job.

Muffler shops view their direct competitors being other muffler shops, and indirect competitors are large department stores, such as Canadian Tire, that have an automotive repair facility.

Muffler shops also incidentally oil and grease vehicles, install shocks and struts, and in some cases, perform wheel alignments, using an alignment machine.
