Operational Details
Transmission shops primarily service, repair and replace worn out or defective transmissions of trucks, cars, motor homes, sports, and utility vehicles. Torque converters and transfer cases for 4- wheel drive vehicles are also installed.
Transmission servicing includes replacing or topping up fluid levels and checking the transmission clutch assembly for defects.
Transmission mechanics are usually trained by, or at a factory training school. Many of the larger shops are franchise operations such as; Lo-Cost or Amoco Transmissions.
Equipment used includes the usual mechanical tools. A major feature of this operation is that the shops take in old transmissions in exchange and provide replacement components. The damaged ones are then re-built, inventoried and sold.
Transmission shops compete with automotive repair shops and garages.
