Description

Operational Details
Retreaders and vulcanizing employers primarily specialize in refurbishing used tires for the trucking business. In the retreading process, the used tires are first checked to see if they are candidate for retreading. If they pass inspection, the imperfections or blemishes, nail holes or tears are repaired. If on the wall of the tire, it cannot be restored. Next, the old tire is stripped and a pre-molded tread is then glued and wrapped around the old tire casing. Batches of tires are then placed in a drum where they are heated to bond the materials to each other and the tires are removed and the rubber product is cured. After final inspection the tires are sprayed with a tire coating to beautify it, and they are then stocked for re-sale. While the hot treatment can be referred to as vulcanizing, the more popular method in today’s market is cold treading.

Cold treading or capping allows the retreader to bond the new tread to the old casing by using glues that adhere to one anther without the use of heat.

The tires are sold retail to transport companies and wholesale to service stations, and garages.
Incidentally, a retreader may sell new tires, but only in support of the retreaded tires.

Tire sales involves employers who sell and install truck and car tires mainly for the general public. These stores will remove the old tire, repair it, or sell replacement tires and rims. Incidental services include: brake jobs, wheel alignments, oil changes etc. as part of this industry.
