Description

Operational Details
Radiator repair shops may specialize in either vehicles or industrial applications. Cooling system specialists repair radiators and oil coolers by replacing fans, clutches, exchangers and rebuilding radiators, transmission coolers for vehicles, heaters, etc.. Industrial radiators are repaired on mining, mobile and stationary equipment. Original Equipment Manufacture (O.E.M.) is common, and most of the repairs involves the replacement of parts. However, some brazing, soldering and welding may be done when the fins of the radiator are damaged, or when the core leaks. Associated parts such as hoses, clamps and brackets are stocked and installed as part of the repair.

Re-coring radiators, heater cores and transmission coolers is accomplished in older model vehicles by desoldering and removing the tank surrounding the core. The core is then replaced and the new tank is soldered on. In new vehicles, the assemblies are plastic and a special machine is used to remove the tank and once the new core is installed the tank is attached, using sealants, or special screws. Air conditioning units may also be repaired and this involves removing Freon and recharging the system and replacing defective parts.

Equipment used are the typical mechanical tools found in a service station or garage and can also include an ultrasonic cleaning machine for moving scale from inside the cores, hose makers and Freon chargers. A radiator shop may also incidentally weld or machine required parts.

Automotive, heavy duty trucks, farm implement dealerships, service station and garages may also undertake general radiator repairs. When more complex, the item is sent out to a radiator shop.
