Description

Operational Details
Furniture is basically manufactured, using wood as a frame or as the material used totally in the manufacture of dressers, drawers, cabinets, curio cabinets, tables and chairs, etc. The wood is either re-sawn into smaller strips, or turned on a lathe to produce spindles and round pieces.

Carpentry shops may do some furniture manufacturing on a limited scale, but it is the furniture manufacturers that are involved in high volume production, using an assembly line. Front room furniture, including chesterfields and chairs are covered with fabric or upholstery. Once a wooden frame has been constructed, springs may be added and fabric is then cut and stapled, nailed or glued to the backing to form a completed piece of furniture.

Sawing, nailing, stapling, gluing, sanding, and painting or finishing the wood are integral to this industry. Lathes are often used to turn lamp stands, table and chair legs, etc.
