Description

Operational Details
Legal counsel, also referred to as barristers, solicitors or lawyers, advise clients of their legal rights in all matters related to the law. They read client’s cases before courts of law, tribunals and boards. They draw up legal documents such as real estate transactions, wills, divorces, and contracts. They negotiate settlements of civil disputes and perform functions related to management and administration . They may also act as executor, trustee, or guardian in estate and family law disputes.

Some legal advisors specialize in one area of the law such as corporate, criminal, commercial, estate, labour law, etc.

Those practicing law are governed by the Law Society of the province and may be "disbarred" if they act inappropriately. A typical law office consists of lawyers, law clerks, legal secretaries and word processing clerks. Occasionally, a law office, if specializing in divorce law, will either hire or contract the services of a private detective. Document servers may also be employed.
