Operational Details
Inspection and testing (non-destructive) involves the review of safety and quality control features, detecting defects in materials and workmanship. Inspection and testing procedures provide a permanent record of compliance during the fabrication, construction, and maintenance of components and facilities in the construction, oil and gas, pulp and paper, power industries. Other activities involve field, shop and plant surveillance, corrosive investigations, visual valve and equipment inspection, and observing critical pieces of equipment in operation. Inspectors might also be contracted by buyers of specialized equipment to certify that mobile, overhead and stationary equipment are in good working order.

Inspectors might also be contracted to provide expertise in setting up quality control measures and production improvements through workflow analysis. Testing may also be done by inspectors or employers who only specialize in testing as their source of revenue. Some of the tests include magna-flux (magnetic particle), dye penetrant, x-ray, gamma ray, radiographic, or ultrasonic testing.

An engineering firm may also incidentally provide some visual inspection advice. However, it is part of their overall operations to offer this advice.
